2 held with $500K inside boat heading to East End
The men, boat captain and Virgin Islander Gerome Nibbs and St Vincent and the Grenadines native Vibert Morgan were charged with failing to declare monies to Her Majesty’s Customs when they made a first appearance at the Magistrate’s Court in John’s Hole, Tortola, on Monday December 23, 2019.
Money isn’t ours
Prosecutor O’Neil Simpson said the men were seen by the Marine Unit of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) heading in the direction of East End on Tortola on the day in question.
When they were asked if they had anything to declare, they allegedly replied they did not.
The defendants also reportedly said they were only test driving the 34 foot red and grey boat they were in.
A search of the vessel was conducted, and the cash was found in a black duffle bag inside a compartment of the boat.
The accused men were then transported to Road Town Police Station where the cash, which was counted in their presence, totalled $500,000.
After counting the cash, it was sealed and placed in evidence bags in police custody while the defendants again claimed they were innocent during a police interview, the court was told.
Hefty bail
The Prosecution did not object to bail, and the court granted the defendants $100,000 bail.
Senior Magistrate Tamia N. Richards however, indicated that half of the bail amount -$50,000 must be in cash.
They are to submit their travel documents and report to the Road Town Police Station every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6:00 am and 12:00 pm.
Attorney-at-law Valerie R. Stevens-Gordon represents Nibbs and Morgan is represented by Attorney Patrick D. Thompson.
Nibbs pleaded not guilty to the charge; however, Morgan did not enter a plea.
Their next court appearance was then scheduled for January 30, 2020.
