NECKER ISLAND, VI – Two divers today April 9, 2016 escaped death and luckily made it to Necker Island after their boat drifted too far from them in the rough waves off the sister island of Virgin Gorda.

According to Coordinator of the Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) John P. Aspinal, the waves were so rough it was hard to actually see the men on the surface of the water.

He said the operation to rescue the men started some time after 10:00 am and ended about 2:30. Aspinal confirmed that the men are now “safe and sound.”

“Everybody is safe...we found them. We had a doctor go and check them out and they are fine,” said Aspinal when contacted by this news site. “They were diving north of Pajeros Point in Virgin Gorda. The boat they were diving from broke down and drifted away from them so when they surfaced up there was no boat to go to,” Aspinal related.

He said that VISAR went out to find them after an alarm was raised. “About six other vessels went out there as well as there were a lot of concerned citizens in Virgin Gorda,” he said.

A helicopter also joined in the rescue efforts.

“It was so rough but the guys actually managed to swim to Necker Island and we found them there just as they came to shore there,” he said, adding that the men swam for about four hours to get to Necker Island.

Wow. That is nothing short of a miracle. 4 hours is a long time to swim or even dog paddle. Praise God for this awesome outcome. I am excited for them and their families that they lived to tell of this.
