NORMAN ISLAND, VI – Two persons lost their lives over the weekend and both are believed to have drowned, according to reports.

This news site understands that a Canadian and an American were believed to have drowned off Norman Island and Guana Island respectively.

Both incidents are said to have occurred on Sunday March 8, 2015. However while one was during the day the other is believed to have occurred Sunday night or possibly into the following day, Monday March 9, 2015.

Contacted today March 10, 2015, President of Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) J. Phil Aspinall said that his entity was not involved in the first case involving the man believed to be an American off Norman Island.

However, he said that a team from VISAR was involved in the recovery of the second man, believed to be Canadian, off Guana Island on Sunday night.

“An elderly gentleman was snorkeling, he got into difficulties. He was in his mid-seventies,” said Aspinall.

At the time when this news site spoke to Aspinall he was unable to confirm the name of the person who’s recovery VISAR was involved in since he was away from the office and had no access to the log that would contain such information.

Police Public Relations Officer Diane Drayton was contacted for a comment but this had not been forthcoming up to post time.

This news site will bring you more details as they become available.

You seem to be a trend-setter but it is rather unfortunate that your trend is so lame. Why bring up any government into this situation and calling names - who are you referring to really? I really don't understand your argument but as long as you do, I wish you the best.

Sorry for the poor soul.---maybe we need to ban swimming alone at night and snorkeling alone.

Something smells fishy. All these drownings of tourists in the BVI need to be further investigated instead of just classified as Drowning, and that's the end. Years ago a man killed his wife while snorkelling by cutting off her air supply, and her parents had the death investigated. Conclusion was a huge life insurance policy, with him (husband) as sole beneficiary.. We really need to pay closer attention to these frequent drownings in the BVI. Just saying.

I agree! and the officials should consider investigating these deaths further. Yes they've drowned but how and what were the probable causes. We are not investigators (at least I'm not) but as is said, and common sense alone will depict that...something smells fishy!

The more visitors the more drowning's. The more the costs go up the more the visitors are older and older people die at a higher rate than the young.

This is such an unfortunate death, or deaths. Sometimes I am of the opinion that these tourists/visitors come to the Virgin Islands to die - it is an ill thought, but it does cross my mind. I believe that when you reach a certain age, and also dependent on your health, there are certain things/activities that you have to give up. I'm not suggesting to stop living your life but let's conscientiously consider the life-or-death factors before engaging in these sort of adventures. I trust that the families find peace and comfort in the Father as they go through this time of bereavement.
