ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – It was not exactly on the night of a full moon but whatever accounted for the many altercations that ensued at the Ira Oliver Skelton Festiville on July 30, 2013, the police are interested in hearing. The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has even stepped up its presence at the village and has announced a no-tolerance stance for the breach of the peace.

Several stallholders and other persons present at the Festival Grounds on Tuesday night told Virgin Islands News Online that there were some 14 fights on that one night, which were more than what the less in number RVIPF officers seemed prepared to handle.

“The night was going so good then all of a sudden was like the gods were going crazy or the devil came out to play because it was fight after fight, fight after fight and it really didn’t look good. People need to control their emotions,” said a stall holder.

The Public Relations Unit of the RVIPF stated in a press release that only one person was arrested in what they described as a number of altercations which occurred at the ground and that they are conducting further investigations into the incidences as victims are currently being interviewed.

“There were no official reports of gunshots fired, however, information from a reliable source confirmed that what sounded like gunshots were heard in the Road Town area somewhere after 1A.M.”

The release further stated that the RVIPF will not tolerate any breaches of the peace or the carrying of an offensive weapon of any kind. “We will arrest any person who displays anti-social behavior or in any way breaches the peace. We will also conduct searches of persons suspected to be armed with offensive weapons of any kind in or around the village in order to ensure the safety of members of the public attending or participating in events at the village. We are asking persons to refrain from disorderly conduct and to encourage those around you to do the same so that all can enjoy the emancipation activities,” the release quoted Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Alwin James as saying.

It also said the RVIPF has set up a police substation at the Festival Grounds. Persons can report any incident or suspicious activity to the officers at the substation or officers patrolling the village.

Officers within the RVIPF are working in partnership with the security companies assigned to the village as well as the Festival and Fair Committee to provide reassurances to the public that Tuesday night’s incidences will not ruin the continued emancipation celebrations.

As witnessed last night July 31, 2013, the presence of private security and RVIPF’s officers’ was at an all time high.

One of the biggest problems with the RVIPF is very, very poor supervision at the divisional level.
