HARRIGAN’S ESTATE, Tortola, VI- Representative for the Second District Hon Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull has declined to say whether or not the people of the Harrigan’s Estate community will, in the foreseeable future, be able to once again use the Harrigan’s Estate Road, which has been closed for over a decade.

Bumps in the road for Gov’t

Hon Turnbull explained that there are some bumps in the road for the National Democratic Party (NDP) Government as it relates to finding a solution to the short portion of the road which has been broken for several years now.

“I can’t tell you what the government’s plan is because we looked at the possibilities of reinstating the road and there are some complexities involving the land to rebuild the road,” he said. “So that question would actually be better suited when the Ministry and their team from Public Works and Communication and Works, decide what are they are going to do to reinstate the road, whether it is going to be the same road or an alternative route,” he pointed out.

Eleven years now road closed

It was on September 2, 2013 when this news site brought to the fore the sufferings of the people of Harrigan’s Estate and the surrounding communities due to the main road closure. That was seven years after the road closed. Eleven years since, the problem still exists.

A hike to the area proved that while it is not as bushy, and it appears that the once abandoned looking, five, two and three story apartments, with a killer view of the Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay, are now getting some attention, the road remains a dead end.

In the past and even today February 28, 2017, those who call the area home continues to plead for the road that is now nothing more than a footpath, a grim reminder of abandonment. To this day, there are no warning signs to incoming motorists of the impending danger that lies ahead.

That road had claimed the life of a visitor to the island when his vehicle toppled off the side of the eroded section of the road.

The road, which many perceive is a quicker alternative route to Sea Cows Bay and West End, has been an election promise one too many and persons over the years have been forced to drive much longer routes to access Harrigan’s Estate. If they are proceeding from Sea Cows Bay, have no choice but to head to Road Town, proceed up Joe’s Hill and or Paul P. Wattley/Manse Road and use other bypass roads to access Harrigan’s Estate.

In the meantime, the people of that community are forced to continue making their way the long way and live in hope.

As history tells us, cowardness must be halted in the very beginning-do not wait and see-act early or it will be too late.

These are the things that we must fix that are hanging for years before we go embark on burdening the taxpayers to fund the airport project -- only for those rich friends over on the cays...

The person that destroyed it when their retaining wall collapsed should fix it! Plain and simple......or be fined big time!

Why aren't there any signs citing "DANGER ROAD ENDS", so people won't again fall to their death?

If this seems like a replay of some political jargon from back in the days-then it is what it is
