ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - American-born Virgin Islands singer, who won the first season of The X Factor USA in 2011 Melanie Amaro, is said to be the new face of the Virgin Islands (VI).

Premier of the Virgin Islands and Minister of Finance Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith announced that in conversations with the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB), Ms. Amaro is soon to be the face of the Virgin Islands.

The Premier made this announcement at his cocktail reception in honour of Ms. Amaro at the Moorings Mariner Inn on May 28, 2012.

The Premier stated that out of the discussions with the tourist board, very soon the people of the Virgin Islands and abroad will see the face of Ms. Amaro “all over the place” promoting the VI.

Mr. Smith commended Melanie on her performance on May 27, 2012 at the BVI Music festival where he said he enjoyed every bit of her performance.

He stated that from the moment, Ms. Amaro was named the 2011 X Factor champion, she instantly became and ambassador for the Virgin Islands.

The Premier added that he supported Melanie throughout the show and he was so happy that she won.

“From that moment the Melanie won, the BVI was further recognised on the map because of her, she is an ambassador for the BVI.”

Ms. Amaro thanked the Premier for the kind hospitality he bestowed on her. She said that the Virgin Islands is always on her mind and no matter where she goes she will keep on promoting and encouraging people abroad to visit Tortola and the VI on a whole.

In attendance were other government officials, internationally known performer and Virgin Islander Iyaz along with other local acts, friends and family.
